Designing for the circle and the thumbnail

Viewers meet your logo as a small circle next to every video title, comment and search result. Design for that circle first, with nothing important near the edges.

  • Mascot style: a character's face with a strong outline is recognizable at avatar size and gives you a personality to reuse in thumbnails and end screens.
  • Lettermark style: one or two letters on a solid background is the cleanest option for channels about a topic rather than a person.
  • Leave padding inside the circle. Nothing should touch the edge.
  • Choose one signature color and use it everywhere: avatar background, thumbnail accents, banner and end screens.
  • Check the logo against YouTube's light and dark themes. A mark on a transparent background can vanish in one of them.
  • Skip hairline outlines and subtle gradients. At comment-avatar size they turn into noise.
  • For a channel-name wordmark, heavy display fonts such as Unbounded, Archivo Black, Righteous and Baloo 2 stay readable over busy footage.
  • On thumbnails, put the wordmark in the same corner at the same size every time, with an outline or backing shape so it stands out.

What you can download for your channel

An avatar-ready icon

Every package includes the icon-only layout and PNG files up to 5000 px, so an 800 × 800 px profile picture stays crisp.

A watermark version

White and black single-color versions stay legible over almost any footage when scaled down to 150 × 150 px.

Social profile pack

Pro adds avatars sized for eight networks, useful when your channel also lives on other platforms.

Vector files for merch

SVG, PDF and EPS for shirts, stickers and mugs once your audience starts asking for merch.

Banner and covers

The banner is a layout you build around the safe area with your horizontal logo. For ready-made covers and post templates for six networks, Pro includes a social media kit.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What size should my YouTube logo be?

At the time of writing, YouTube recommends an 800 × 800 px profile picture, a 2560 × 1440 px channel banner with logos and text kept inside a 1546 × 423 px safe area, and a 150 × 150 px video watermark. Check YouTube's Help Center before uploading, because these recommendations get revised.

Should I use my face or a logo as the profile picture?

If you are the channel, a well-lit photo of your face is often the stronger profile picture, and you can still use a logo for the watermark, banner and merch. Channels about a topic, a game or a show, and creators who stay anonymous, are better served by a logo.

Mascot or lettermark: which works better?

A mascot gives you a character to reuse in thumbnails, emotes and merch, and suits gaming, comedy and kids' content. A lettermark is calmer and fits education, tech, finance and review channels. Generate both and pick the one you recognize faster at comment-avatar size.

Can I use the logo as a video watermark?

Yes. Use a single-color version, usually white, on a transparent background, sized to YouTube's recommended 150 × 150 px. Every package includes white and black versions, so you can pick whichever suits your footage.

Can I put the logo on monetized videos and merch?

Yes. Every paid package includes an exclusive commercial license to your final design, which covers monetized videos, sponsorships and merchandise. If the channel grows into a business, consider a trademark after a trademark attorney's clearance search.

Will my logo look like a famous creator's?

Don't name other creators or channels when you describe your logo; you want your own look, and imitation can cause trademark problems. Each design is original artwork for your brief, but compare your favorite with the big channels in your niche before you commit.
