Logo ideas for software and app makers

Symbols that read instantly in this industry. Mention one when you generate, or let Graphivo surprise you.

  • One bold glyph centered in a rounded square
  • A folded-paper shape that suggests your app's core action
  • Code brackets or a terminal prompt, the classic for developer tools
  • A checkmark merged with a letter for productivity apps
  • Stacked layers for data and infrastructure products
  • A chat-bubble tail joined to your initial for messaging apps
  • A simple creature or object mascot for consumer apps
  • A two-tone split shape that still reads in one color

Color

Color palettes that work

Home-screen blue

#0A2540 · #1E6FFF · #E8F0FF

Blue is everywhere on home screens, so it feels familiar and trustworthy; that also means your shape has to do the work of standing out. Navy carries the wordmark on the website and docs.

Mint terminal

#0D1117 · #3DDC97 · #C9D1D9

Dark-first, for developer tools whose docs and dashboards default to dark mode. Mint on near-black is easy to spot in a dock, and the near-black works as text on white.

Sunrise

#2E1A47 · #FF7A59 · #FFC857

Warm coral and yellow stand out among blue icons for consumer apps. The deep plum anchors the wordmark and gives the icon an edge on light wallpapers.

Software & App

Rubik

Slightly rounded corners make it friendly for consumer apps, and it's sturdy enough for a short name under an icon in store screenshots.

Software & App

Space Mono

A monospaced face that instantly signals code. Ideal for CLIs, APIs and developer tools; keep it to short names, since monospace gets wide quickly.

Software & App

DM Sans

Neutral and compact for B2B software. It matches typical dashboard interfaces and looks right in a docs-site header and a changelog email.

Styles that suit software and app makers

  • Geometric

    Precise circles, triangles and grids

  • Minimal

Simple shapes, lots of space, one or two colors

  • Mascot

    A friendly character

  • Abstract

    A unique abstract mark

Clichés to avoid

  • Putting the app name inside the icon: the store shows the name underneath, and text at home-screen size is unreadable.
  • Fine detail and thin lines: icons appear as small as a settings list or a notification.
  • Mimicking a platform's built-in app icons: app review guidelines discourage icons that could be confused with system apps.
  • Relying on a gradient or shadow to separate shapes: tinted and monochrome versions need a shape that works flat.
  • Generic gears and clouds: they say 'software' in general, not what your product does.

Designing a software & app logo that works

Software brands live in more icon slots than almost any other business: the store listing, the home screen or dock, the favicon, the notification bar, the docs header, a GitHub avatar and a README banner. Many are tiny and some are single-color; Android notification icons, for example, are drawn as a white silhouette. Design the icon first and make sure its silhouette alone identifies the product.

iOS applies its own rounded-corner mask to your square artwork, and Android adaptive icons can be cropped to circles or squircles, keeping only a central safe zone. Keep the symbol well inside the edges on a solid background color. The wordmark belongs on the website, docs and store screenshots, never inside the icon.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does my app icon have to match my logo exactly?

No, but they should clearly belong together. The usual approach is the logo's symbol on a solid background as the icon, with the full logo kept for the website, store screenshots and docs. Avoid two unrelated marks, which make users learn your brand twice.

What icon sizes do the app stores need?

Apple asks for a 1024 x 1024 px master for the App Store, and Google Play wants a 512 x 512 px store icon, plus the in-app sizes your build tools generate. Pro includes an app-icon pack with PNG sizes from 16 to 1024 px for Apple and Android and a favicon, on top of the SVG, PDF and EPS files every package has.

Should a developer tool have a mascot?

Plenty of well-loved developer tools do, and a mascot makes a dry product approachable in docs, on stickers and at conference booths. The risk is complexity, because the mascot still has to read as an icon in a terminal tab or a package registry. Use the head or silhouette as the icon and save the full character for illustrations and swag.

How do I prepare for tinted or monochrome icons?

Make sure the symbol works as one flat shape, since iOS can tint home-screen icons, macOS menu-bar icons are usually monochrome and Android notifications use white silhouettes. Convert your icon to one color: if two parts merge into a blob, add space between them or simplify. A clear outline with one cut-out usually survives every treatment.

Can I use the same icon on desktop and mobile?

Usually, with small adjustments. One symbol can serve iOS, Android, Windows and macOS, but each platform has its own conventions for shape, padding and shadows. Keep one master symbol and adapt the container per platform rather than redrawing it.
