| Feature | Size | Shape | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS App Store icon | 1024 × 1024 px | Square; iOS applies the rounded mask | No transparency; don't pre-round the corners |
| Android adaptive icon | 108 × 108 dp foreground and background layers | Masked by the device into a circle, squircle or other shape | Keep key content inside the central 66 dp safe zone |
| Google Play listing icon | 512 × 512 px | Full square; Google Play applies its own rounding | Don't add rounded corners or shadows yourself |
| Website favicon | 16 × 16 and 32 × 32 px (ICO or PNG) | Square | Fine detail disappears; test at actual size |
Designing a symbol that works as an app icon
An app icon is tiny, sits in a grid of other apps and gets its shape from the operating system. One bold symbol on a full background does the job.
- No text. The name already sits under the icon, and words at icon size are unreadable. A single letter used as a shape is the one exception.
- Bold silhouette. If the icon filled solid black wouldn't be recognizable, simplify it.
- Fill the canvas. Run the background color to the edges and let the symbol take up a good share of the square.
- Don't pre-round the corners, add a drop shadow or fake gloss. The platforms handle shape and depth themselves.
- Test on light and dark wallpapers. A white-background icon can glare on a dark home screen, and a dark one can vanish.
- Crop it to a circle. Android masks vary by device, so if anything important disappears in a circle, shrink the symbol toward the center.
- Compare it with the apps your users already have. In a crowded category, a distinctive color often does more than a clever shape.

Describe one action or object
What does the app help people do? Pick one image for it: a checkmark for tasks, a leaf for plant care, a waveform for audio.
Generate in symbol mode
Use Symbol + text with the geometric or minimal preset. The name won't appear in the icon, so the symbol has to stand on its own.
Run the silhouette test
Look at each design in one color at the size of an icon in a settings list. Keep the ones you can still recognize.
Switch to icon-only and set colors
In the editor, choose the icon-only layout and adjust the palette. Pick a background color that sets you apart from the apps around yours.
Export and build platform files
Download the app-icon pack that comes with Pro and add the 1024 px image to your Xcode project. Build Android's adaptive layers from the SVG in Android Studio, and upload the 512 px PNG to Google Play.
Test on real devices
Install a test build and look at the icon on light and dark wallpapers, inside a folder and in search results before launch.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Should my app icon include the app name?
No. The name already appears under the icon and in the store, and letters at icon size are hard to read. A single letter used as a bold shape is the exception.
Can I use the same design on iOS and Android?
Yes, but the crops differ. iOS rounds the corners of a full square, while Android masks adaptive icons into whatever shape the device uses. Center the symbol, keep it inside the Android safe zone, and preview both before release.
Why can't the App Store icon be transparent?
At the time of writing, Apple requires the App Store icon to be opaque. Fill the background with a solid color and let the symbol sit on top. Check Apple's current guidelines before you upload.
Does the pack include Android adaptive icon layers?
No. The favicon and app-icon pack contains flat ICO and PNG files from 16 to 1024 px, plus vector files. Android Studio's Image Asset tool builds the adaptive layers: use the symbol as the foreground and your brand color as the background.
What about dark, tinted and themed icons?
iOS 18 and later offer dark and tinted home-screen appearances, and Android 13 and later can show themed icons built from a monochrome layer. A clear, single-shape silhouette adapts best to all of these. Check each platform's current guidelines, since the details have changed in recent releases.
Can I use the app icon as my website favicon?
Usually, and it keeps your brand consistent between app and site. Confirm the symbol survives at 16 px; you may need to drop the background or simplify the shape. Pro's favicon pack includes a ready-made ICO file and the small PNG sizes.
